Some of the biggest names associated with Christian leadership events are distancing themselves from Life Surge, raising questions about the faith-based organization and its financial education programs.
Pastor Craig Groeschel, former Heisman Trophy winner Tim Tebow, and Boston Celtics head coach Joe Mazzulla have each stepped away or paused their involvement following reports alleging that some Life Surge attendees were pressured into purchasing expensive financial training programs.
What Is Life Surge?
Life Surge holds large Christian events combining worship, motivational speakers, financial education and messages about building wealth for what the organization calls “Kingdom impact.”
Its stages have featured prominent Christian speakers, entertainers, business leaders and professional sports figures.
But a recent investigation by Mother Jones and the Pablo Torre Finds Out podcast alleged that attendees were encouraged to move from relatively inexpensive events into increasingly costly financial training.
According to Religion News Service, some advanced SurgeU programs range from approximately $10,000 to $40,000. Critics interviewed by reporters alleged that some participants accumulated substantial debt after enrolling.
Tim Tebow Pauses His Relationship
Tebow responded by announcing that he was pausing his relationship with Life Surge while his team investigates.
“The allegations are extremely, extremely serious,” Tebow said, adding that his team wanted to learn more about the facts before moving forward.
Life Surge responded publicly, saying it “strongly disagrees” with how the organization has been characterized.
The company said the reporting failed to adequately represent positive student experiences and the safeguards and compliance measures it says are in place. Life Surge also expressed continued respect for Tebow.
Joe Mazzulla Completely Backs Out
Boston Celtics coach Joe Mazzulla took an even firmer step.
Mazzulla said that after learning about the allegations, he “completely backed out” of his involvement. He also emphasized the importance of sharing one’s faith authentically and ethically without negatively affecting others.
Craig Groeschel Will No Longer Speak
Now another major Christian leader has stepped away.
Life.Church senior pastor Craig Groeschel will no longer speak at upcoming Life Surge events.
Groeschel had reportedly been scheduled for events in Charlotte, Hartford, Tampa and Nashville.
A Life.Church spokesperson said Groeschel was grateful for previous opportunities to speak but “doesn’t plan to speak at any upcoming events” and will instead continue prioritizing his ministry at Life.Church.
Life Surge Pushes Back
It is important to note that the allegations remain disputed.
Life Surge says it does not condone using religious faith, fear or spiritual beliefs to pressure someone into buying a product. The organization also says fewer than 3% of its event ticket purchasers ultimately enroll in advanced training beyond its Impact Class.
Life Surge has made its position unmistakable:
“We will not apologize for who we are, what we believe, or the work we do.”
A Bigger Question for Christian Ministry
The controversy now reaches beyond one organization.
Christian conferences routinely bring together ministry, celebrity, business and personal development. But when financial products and expensive training programs are presented within a faith-centered environment, questions inevitably arise about where ministry ends and marketing begins.
For Christians watching Groeschel, Tebow and Mazzulla distance themselves from Life Surge, that may be the most important issue.
Life Surge says its mission remains helping Christians multiply financial resources for Kingdom purposes. Its critics are asking whether some of the methods used to accomplish that mission went too far.
For now, those competing claims deserve careful examination.
And as more prominent Christian figures reconsider their association with Life Surge, one question is becoming increasingly difficult to ignore:
