Was This the Pharaoh of Moses? Massive Ancient Egyptian Statue Discovery Raises Biblical Questions

THE EVIDENCE ROOM — INVESTIGATION #005

EGYPT — An extraordinary archaeological discovery in Egypt’s Nile Delta has uncovered the remains of two monumental statues associated with Pharaoh Ramesses II, a ruler frequently linked to the biblical story of Moses and the Exodus.

An Unexpected Discovery

The excavation began when landowner Khaled el-Shahat Khalil discovered an inscribed stone near his home in Behbeit El-Hagar and notified Egyptian antiquities authorities.

Archaeologists subsequently uncovered a massive royal statue head measuring approximately 5.25 feet tall. Researchers estimate the complete monument originally stood nearly 28 feet high.

A second damaged statue and a pink granite block containing royal inscriptions were also recovered.

The Pharaoh Associated With Moses

Ramesses II ruled Egypt approximately 1279–1213 B.C. His reign is frequently discussed in connection with the Exodus because Scripture identifies a city called Raamses.

Exodus 1:11 (KJV) states:

“And they built for Pharaoh treasure cities, Pithom and Raamses.”

However, the Bible never identifies the Exodus Pharaoh by name, and historians continue debating the chronology of these events.

Does This Discovery Support Biblical History?

The statues provide archaeological evidence of Ramesses II’s monumental presence in the Nile Delta, a region important to ancient Egyptian history.

Nevertheless, the discovery does not establish that Ramesses II encountered Moses or participated in the biblical Exodus.

What Archaeologists Hope to Discover Next

Excavations remain underway as researchers investigate the statues’ original locations and their relationship to nearby ancient structures.

For biblical archaeology, the discovery offers another opportunity to examine the historical civilization described in Scripture.

The Evidence Room will continue following the investigation as new findings emerge.
