Digital asset marketplace Bakkt has teamed up with Quiznos Restaurants to pilot in-store bitcoin payments.
The Bakkt App allows users of its wallet to send bitcoin, gift cards and cash to anyone, including people who don’t use the app. The company said app users can send crypto and gift cards to family, friends or broader social circles through email. Now Sandwiches have been added to Bakkt’s digital asset ecosystem. From mid-August, diners at select Quiznos fast food outlets across Denver, including the airport location, will be able to pay for their sandwiches and salads with crypto.
“Through this partnership, we are introducing unique experiences to Quiznos customers by enabling them to take advantage of new ways to interact with digital assets and bringing bitcoin utility to the mainstream consumer market,” said Sheela Zemlin, Chief Revenue Officer at Bakkt, in the statement. “We will closely watch how this pilot performs, with the potential to expand the partnership to additional Quiznos locations across the country.”
Quiznos was founded in 1981 by Jimmy Lambatos and sold to Rick and Richard Schaden ten years later, before growing to nearly 5,000 restaurants afterwards. As of 2013, Quiznos was the second-largest submarine sandwich shop chain in North America, behind Subway. Customers who download the Bakkt app and make crypto payments at the restaurants will get $15 of bitcoin as a reward.
