In a significant development, Jordan Dave Persad, a 20-year-old from Orlando, Florida, has been sentenced to 30 months in prison by United States District Judge Diane J. Humetewa.
His sentence is accompanied by three years of supervised release and a restitution order of $945,833. Persad pleaded guilty to Conspiracy to Commit Computer Fraud, marking the conclusion of a cybercrime saga that unfolded between March 2021 and September 2022.
During this period, Persad and his co-conspirators orchestrated a series of SIM swapping attacks, gaining unauthorized access to victims’ email accounts and online cryptocurrency holdings. Termed “SIM swapping,” their criminal activities resulted in the theft of nearly $1 million in cryptocurrency from multiple victims, with one Arizonian falling prey to a $30,000 loss. In the aftermath, Persad and his associates divided the stolen funds, with Persad pocketing around $475,000.
This case, investigated by the Federal Bureau of Investigation, highlights the severity of cybercrimes in the cryptocurrency realm. The prosecution, led by Assistant U.S. Attorneys Amy Chang and Bridget Minder, serves as a warning to would-be criminals engaged in similar activities. Cybercriminals are increasingly finding themselves in the crosshairs of law enforcement, and justice is being served.
