For years, Donald Trump could count on intense loyalty from some of the most recognizable voices in America’s conservative movement. Evangelical Christians, MAGA activists, Republican lawmakers and conservative media personalities defended him through political battles that might have ended another politician’s career.
But something has changed.
Some conservatives who once stood with Trump are no longer simply disagreeing with the president on isolated policies. They are publicly challenging him over Iran, foreign policy, the Jeffrey Epstein files and what they believe the America First movement was supposed to represent.
Now conservative pastor Chuck Baldwin is adding his voice to the rebellion.
Pastor Chuck Baldwin Takes on Trump
Baldwin, pastor of Liberty Fellowship in Kalispell, Montana, is hardly a voice from the political left.
The longtime conservative Christian minister was the Constitution Party’s presidential nominee in 2008. But Baldwin’s recent criticism of Trump has been blistering.
On September 3, Baldwin published a column declaring that “Donald Trump Should Be Removed From Office NOW!” His argument centered heavily on Trump’s foreign policy and the war with Iran.
For CNIR readers, the accompanying Baldwin video provides something especially significant: a conservative Christian pastor openly challenging a Republican president who has enjoyed substantial support from evangelical voters.
But Baldwin isn’t standing alone.
The Epstein Files Became a Breaking Point
One of the biggest fractures inside Trump’s political coalition developed around the government’s handling of records involving convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein.
The controversy became particularly damaging because demands for greater disclosure weren’t coming exclusively from Democrats.
Republicans were demanding answers, too.
Former Georgia Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene, once one of Trump’s most recognizable and aggressive defenders, joined Republican Rep. Thomas Massie and others seeking greater disclosure of Epstein-related government records.
Greene eventually described the Epstein dispute as central to her falling-out with Trump. Trump, meanwhile, publicly severed his political relationship with Greene, called her “Wacky” and indicated he would support a primary challenger against her.
Trump ultimately reversed course in November 2025 and urged House Republicans to vote for releasing the files after previously opposing the effort.
But the controversy didn’t disappear.
When hundreds of thousands of pages were subsequently released, extensive redactions and incomplete disclosure drew criticism from Democrats and some Republicans. Reuters reported that Greene complained that people were angry and “walking away,” while Massie argued that the government had failed to comply fully with the disclosure law.
Importantly, appearing in Epstein-related records or having previously associated with Epstein does not by itself establish criminal wrongdoing. The political controversy surrounding Trump has focused heavily on government transparency, what records should be released and why portions remained withheld or redacted.
From Trump Loyalist to Trump Critic
That makes Greene’s transformation particularly striking.
This wasn’t a Republican who had always opposed Trump.
Greene had been one of his most visible defenders. AP described her as a loyal participant in Trump’s 2024 comeback campaign and noted how closely her political identity had been connected with MAGA.
Yet disagreements over Epstein, foreign policy and domestic priorities eventually produced an extraordinary public breakup.
And Greene wasn’t the only recognizable conservative voice questioning Trump.
Tucker Carlson Breaks With Trump
Tucker Carlson, whose audience overlaps significantly with Trump’s populist political base, has also publicly challenged the president—particularly over foreign intervention and the war with Iran.
Trump responded to Carlson’s criticism with personal attacks, saying Carlson had “lost his way” and was no longer MAGA.
The significance isn’t simply that Carlson disagrees with Trump.
It’s where the criticism is coming from.
Carlson, Greene and Baldwin aren’t progressive Democrats attacking Trump from the left. Their objections emerge from within different parts of the conservative, populist and America First political world.
Is America First Splitting Apart?
There are additional signs of disagreement.
Republican lawmakers have challenged Trump on Epstein transparency, while other Republicans have questioned aspects of his foreign policy. Massie’s involvement in forcing disclosure of the Epstein records became significant enough that Trump backed an opponent seeking to remove the Kentucky Republican from Congress.
None of this establishes that America’s conservatives as a whole have abandoned Donald Trump. He continues to command substantial support among Republican voters.
But that isn’t what makes this story remarkable.
It’s who is speaking out.
Marjorie Taylor Greene once fought alongside Trump.
Tucker Carlson helped give voice to the populist movement that became central to Trump’s political coalition.
Chuck Baldwin represents a segment of conservative Christianity that has long warned against globalism, foreign intervention and excessive federal power.
And Thomas Massie has challenged the president from the libertarian wing of the Republican Party.
Different people. Different backgrounds. Different disagreements.
But increasingly, the criticism is coming from inside Trump’s own political neighborhood.
The Epstein files intensified questions about transparency. The Iran war intensified disagreements over America First foreign policy. And now conservative religious voices such as Baldwin are bringing those concerns into the pulpit.
Perhaps the most important question isn’t whether conservatives have suddenly become liberals.
Clearly, they haven’t.
The question is much more uncomfortable for the movement that helped return Trump to the White House:
Are some of Trump’s former allies abandoning him—or do they believe Trump abandoned the principles they supported in the first place?
