Two Years After a Swiss Church Introduced ‘AI Jesus,’ Is Artificial Intelligence Changing the Future of Christianity?

CHRISTIAN NEWS & INVESTIGATIVE REPORTS | TECHNOLOGY & FAITH

A controversial religious experiment in Switzerland has moved beyond its original installation, with researchers pursuing new applications for artificial intelligence in spiritual conversations.

LUCERNE, SWITZERLAND — Two years after a historic Swiss Catholic chapel introduced an artificial intelligence representation of Jesus Christ, the controversial experiment continues to influence research into technology, religion, and spiritual guidance.

The Original AI Jesus Experiment

In 2024, St. Peter’s Chapel in Lucerne collaborated with Lucerne University of Applied Sciences and Arts to introduce Deus in Machina, an interactive installation featuring a computer-generated representation of Jesus.

Visitors could enter a confessional-style booth and ask religious questions in approximately 100 languages. Contrary to widespread reports, the digital figure was not a hologram and did not administer sacramental confessions.

What Did Researchers Discover?

The experiment operated from August 23 through October 20, 2024, generating approximately 900 conversations about relationships, loneliness, death, peace, and religious beliefs.

Church representatives emphasized that the installation was an artistic and technological experiment, not a substitute for clergy or Christian worship.

A New Development in 2026

The research has since advanced beyond the original installation.

Lucerne University launched a follow-up initiative called AI-Jesus 2.0, running from September 2025 through June 2026. The project explored immersive artificial intelligence for spiritual conversations, including potential partnerships and financing for future development.

A research paper published in April 2026 also examined the original installation’s design, theological implications, and generally favorable preliminary participant responses.

Can Artificial Intelligence Provide Spiritual Guidance?

The developments raise important questions about religious authority, biblical accuracy, and whether technology can responsibly participate in spiritual counseling.

For Christians, 1 John 4:1 emphasizes the importance of testing spiritual claims rather than accepting them without examination.

Although researchers envision AI supporting spiritual education and guidance, there is no verified announcement that the original chapel installation has become a permanent religious service.

The question now confronting Christianity is whether artificial intelligence can help people explore faith without being mistaken for the divine authority it attempts to represent.
