Hand picked by the Obama Administration, Rosa Gumataotao Rios, “Rosie” as she is affectionately known, served as the 43rd Treasurer of the United States and is a visiting scholar at the Radcliffe Institute for Advanced Study at Harvard University.
Ripple CEO Brad Garlinghouse said of Rios, “because of her experience in both the public and private sectors, as well as her success in “rapidly accelerating businesses” in the company’s decision, is why he decided to bring her on board.
“Blockchain and crypto will underpin our future global financial systems” Rios said. “Ripple is one of the best examples of how to use cryptocurrency in a substantive and legitimate role to facilitate payments globally,” she added.
Ripple also announced Kristina Campbell, formerly with payments platform PayNearMe at fintech company GreenDot, will be joining the firm as Chief Financial Officer to “accelerate growth and deliver value to shareholders.” Campbell said she aimed to use crypto and blockchain technology to “make the global financial system accessible to all.”
In December 2020, The Securities and Exchange Commission announced that it was filing an action against Ripple Labs Inc. and its two top executives, who are also significant security holders. The SEC is alleging that they raised over $1.3 billion through an unregistered, ongoing digital asset securities offering. Ripple’s Cryptocurrency XRP, volatility has been attributed to those charges brought on by the SEC.
As the news broke yesterday of Dogecoin being listed on the Gemini Exchange, the meme coin became the fourth-largest cryptocurrency by that metric. This meant that it surpassed Ripple’s XRP, whose market cap is just over $60 billion.
