JERUSALEM — An unusually named Israeli political candidate is attracting attention after submitting a party list for Israel’s 2026 Knesset election: Yeshua Ben David, whose Hebrew name can be rendered in English as “Jesus, Son of David.”
Despite the striking biblical association, Ben David is not Jesus Christ, and his candidacy should not be confused with the New Testament’s teaching concerning the return of Christ. He is the chairman of Gan Eden, Hebrew for “Garden of Eden,” a small political party presenting an unconventional mixture of political, economic and religious proposals.
Gan Eden Enters the Election
Ben David submitted Gan Eden’s candidate list to Israel’s Central Elections Committee at the Knesset on September 7. Israeli election coverage confirms that Gan Eden, led by Yeshua Ben David, is among the lists submitted for the 26th Knesset election.
Israel Today reported that Ben David has expressed ambitions of becoming prime minister and has spoken about serving as a priest in a future Temple. He has also compared the Knesset to a modern form of the ancient Sanhedrin, the Jewish judicial and religious council known from biblical and historical accounts.
Israeli news outlet N12 similarly reported that Ben David described his desire to serve as a priest in the Temple and said that, if that were not possible, he would begin with the Knesset, which he characterized as a Sanhedrin.
An Unconventional Political Platform
Gan Eden’s proposals extend well beyond religious symbolism. Reports on the party’s platform describe proposals involving debt relief, mortgage cancellation, changes to Israel’s welfare system, judicial reform and elements of Jewish religious law.
The party’s unusual combination of politics, Temple imagery and biblical terminology has made Ben David stand out among dozens of candidate lists competing for seats in Israel’s parliament.
However, the political reality is important. Israeli citizens do not directly elect the prime minister. Voters choose party lists for the Knesset. Following an election, Israel’s president consults parliamentary factions and assigns a Knesset member the task of forming a government. The person who successfully forms that government becomes prime minister.
A Name Certain to Capture Christian Attention
For Christians, perhaps nothing about the candidacy is more striking than the name Yeshua Ben David.
“Yeshua” is the Hebrew name commonly rendered Jesus in English, while “Ben David” means Son of David—a title with unmistakable biblical significance for Christians familiar with New Testament descriptions of Jesus Christ.
That linguistic coincidence makes the story remarkable, but it does not provide biblical evidence identifying Ben David with Jesus Christ, the Messiah, the Antichrist or any other prophetic figure.
For now, Yeshua Ben David is exactly what the documented evidence establishes: the leader of an unconventional Israeli political party whose extraordinary name and religiously influenced platform have drawn attention during Israel’s 2026 election campaign.
