Martin Luther King Jr. Preached Here. Now a $750,000 Grant Is Giving This Historic Church New Hope

CLEVELAND, Ohio — A historic Cleveland congregation with deep roots in the African American Christian community is receiving a $750,000 preservation grant to help protect a church building associated with the Civil Rights Movement and the ministry of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.

A Historic Church Receives New Hope

Shiloh Baptist Church, established in 1849, has served generations of worshippers for more than 175 years. Its current building, constructed in 1906, remains an important landmark in Cleveland’s religious and cultural history.

The $750,000 award, provided through the National Park Service’s African American Civil Rights Grant Program, will support rehabilitation efforts coordinated by the Cleveland Restoration Society.

Where Martin Luther King Jr. Once Preached

The church’s historical significance extends beyond its architecture. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. preached at Shiloh Baptist Church in 1967, connecting the congregation to a pivotal chapter in America’s struggle for civil rights.

The preservation project is expected to address building deterioration, water damage, climate-control concerns, and accessibility improvements.

A Gift From God

Rev. Dr. Lisa Goods, the church’s pastor, reportedly described the financial assistance as a “gift from God,” reflecting the congregation’s gratitude for the opportunity to preserve its historic home.

For Shiloh Baptist Church, the grant represents more than structural repairs. It offers an opportunity to safeguard a place where Christian faith, community leadership, and civil rights history intersect.

As restoration efforts move forward, the church’s enduring legacy serves as a reminder of the important role African American congregations have played in American history.
