Venezuela Seeks Full Membership in BRICS: Foreign Minister Announces Aspirations

Venezuela is experiencing a financial crisis, and the nation is grappling with hyperinflation, surging rates of starvation, the spread of diseases, rising crime levels, and increased mortality rates. This dire combination has led to a significant exodus of people from the country. Widely regarded as the most severe economic crisis in Venezuela’s history, this current situation represents the most challenging economic circumstances faced by a country in peacetime since the mid-20th century. Therefore, in a significant diplomatic move, Venezuela is expressing its eagerness to join the prestigious BRICS alliance, aiming to become a full member as swiftly as possible, according to Foreign Minister Yvan Gil Pinto.

The announcement was made during a press conference in Moscow, where Minister Pinto emphasized Venezuela’s commitment to integrating into the prominent group.

The crucial discussions surrounding Venezuela’s potential entry into BRICS as a partner country are scheduled to take place next year during the BRICS summit in Russia. Minister Pinto highlighted the nation’s anticipation and stated, “Venezuela would like to become a full-fledged member of this association as soon as possible.”

Currently consisting of Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa, BRICS recently declared its decision to extend invitations for full membership to Argentina, Egypt, Iran, the UAE, Saudi Arabia, and Ethiopia, starting from January 1, 2024, as announced at the summit in Johannesburg in August 2023.

As geopolitical dynamics continue to evolve, Venezuela’s aspirations to join BRICS signify a strategic diplomatic move that will undoubtedly shape future international collaborations and alliances. The discussions at the upcoming summit in Russia are poised to be a pivotal moment in this potential expansion of the influential alliance.
