Christian Families Flee Pakistan After Mob Attack: Is Religious Freedom Under Threat Again?

WORLD NEWS | CHRISTIAN PERSECUTION | OCTOBER 10, 2026

More than 35 Christian families reportedly abandoned their homes after a blasphemy accusation against one man sparked an attack on his property in Pakistan’s Punjab province.

SHEIKHUPURA, Pakistan — Fear has gripped a Christian community in eastern Pakistan after an angry mob set fire to a Christian man’s home and pharmacy on Friday, October 9, 2026. The violence reportedly forced more than 35 Christian families to flee their village, fearing additional attacks.

Blasphemy Allegation Sparks Violence

The unrest began after police arrested Kamran Masih, a 40-year-old Christian father of three, on October 8. Residents accused him of distributing allegedly blasphemous material through WhatsApp groups.

According to Christian Daily International–Morning Star News, protesters gathered outside Masih’s residence and pharmacy in Gharial Kalan village, near Narang Mandi. Members of the crowd subsequently set both properties ablaze.

The allegation against Masih has not been independently established as true.

Police Respond as Christian Families Escape

Police deployed additional personnel to protect residents and prevent further destruction.

Local reporting indicates that authorities also arrested suspects connected to the attack, although accounts differ regarding the number detained. No deaths or injuries were reported in the immediate aftermath.

Pakistan’s Blasphemy Laws Face Renewed Scrutiny

Pakistan’s controversial blasphemy laws have repeatedly drawn international criticism. Human Rights Watch warns that accusations can expose religious minorities to intimidation, imprisonment, and mob violence.

The latest incident recalls earlier attacks against Christian communities, including the destruction of churches and homes in Jaranwala in 2023.

Christian Leaders Demand Protection

Christian rights advocate Sardar Mushtaq Gill condemned the violence and urged stronger protections for religious minorities.

The incident raises urgent questions about religious liberty, public safety, and whether Pakistani authorities can prevent unproven allegations from escalating into collective punishment.

For Christians worldwide, the situation is a reminder of the importance of defending religious freedom and supporting vulnerable communities.

CNIR will continue following developments as authorities investigate the attack and displaced families seek safety.
