WORLD NEWS | NATURAL DISASTERS | OCTOBER 10, 2026
PANAMA CITY, Panama — Two powerful earthquakes struck Panama on Friday, October 9, 2026, triggering widespread evacuations, structural damage, and dozens of aftershocks across the Central American nation. The seismic emergency has renewed attention on earthquake risks along the Pacific Ring of Fire.

Powerful Earthquakes Strike Hours Apart
According to the United States Geological Survey (USGS), the first earthquake registered a magnitude of 7.7, striking near Pitaloza Arriba at approximately 12:56 p.m. local time. The earthquake originated roughly 12.6 kilometers (7.8 miles) beneath the surface.
Approximately two and a half hours later, a second powerful earthquake measuring 6.6 struck near Río Grande, intensifying concerns among residents and emergency officials.
Buildings Damaged as Residents Flee
The earthquakes damaged homes, public buildings, and historic structures in several provinces. Among the affected landmarks was the historic Church of San Atanasio.
More than 45 aftershocks followed the initial earthquake, leaving frightened residents sleeping outdoors. Several injuries were reported, although authorities had not confirmed any fatalities in the initial assessments.
Pacific Ring of Fire Raises Concerns
Panama’s earthquakes occurred amid seismic activity elsewhere in the Pacific region, including a magnitude 6.3 earthquake near Vanuatu on October 8.
Scientists recognize the Ring of Fire as a region of frequent earthquakes and volcanic activity. However, separate earthquakes do not necessarily indicate an unusual increase in regional seismic activity or predict another major disaster.

A Nation Faces Recovery and Uncertainty
Panamanian authorities continued assessing damage as emergency crews responded to affected communities. Although the Panama Canal remained operational, the earthquakes disrupted transportation, electricity, and daily life.
For Christian communities worldwide, the disaster also presents an opportunity to pray for affected families, emergency workers, and those facing uncertainty.
CNIR will continue following developments as Panama assesses the destruction and the possibility of additional aftershocks.
