Nearly $540,000 for Part-Time Work? Pastor Marvin Winans Disputes Salary Records

DETROIT, MICHIGAN — Grammy-winning gospel singer and Perfecting Church pastor Marvin Winans is facing questions over financial disclosures showing substantial compensation from a Detroit nonprofit he leads. Winans firmly denies receiving the reported payments, attributing the figures to accounting errors.

What the Financial Records Reveal

According to publicly available IRS filings, Perfecting Community Development Corporation reported $538,955 in base compensation for Winans in 2025. Additional reported compensation brought the organization’s disclosed total to $545,736.

The filings identify Winans as president, working approximately 20 hours weekly. Historical tax records also show reported compensation in previous years.

Pastor Winans Responds

During a September 29 Bible study, Winans disputed the figures, declaring that he had never received money from the nonprofit.

According to The Christian Post, his accounting firm, Chitwood & Chitwood, supported his denial. Winans attributed the discrepancies to accounting mistakes and indicated that amended tax returns would be submitted.

Government Funding Raises Questions

The nonprofit received a $500,000 government grant in 2024. However, Michigan officials told The Center Square that their records showed the grant money was being spent appropriately and that they had no evidence of misuse.

Financial Transparency and Accountability

The central question remains unresolved: Why do the nonprofit’s financial disclosures repeatedly report compensation that Winans insists he never received?

Tax filings document what an organization reports, but they do not independently establish that the listed payments reached the individual.

For Christian organizations entrusted with charitable donations and public funding, accurate financial reporting is essential to maintaining public confidence.

CNIR will continue following the dispute, including any amended financial disclosures that clarify the reported compensation.
