The Bible Came Centuries Before the Qur’an: Why Does That Matter?

Two Sacred Books, Centuries Apart

The Bible and the Qur’an are central to Christianity and Islam, two of the world’s largest religions. Both are regarded by their respective followers as divine revelation. However, their historical origins reveal a significant chronological difference that raises important questions about religious history and scriptural authority.

The Bible’s Ancient Origins

The Hebrew Scriptures, known to Christians as the Old Testament, developed over many centuries before the birth of Jesus Christ.

The New Testament emerged during the first century AD, with most scholars dating its writings between approximately AD 50 and 100.

Ancient biblical manuscripts, including fourth-century Codex Sinaiticus and Codex Vaticanus, demonstrate that substantial collections of Christian Scripture existed centuries before Islam emerged.

The Qur’an Emerges in Seventh-Century Arabia

According to Islamic tradition, Muhammad began receiving revelations around AD 610, approximately 510 years after the end of the first century.

These revelations continued until Muhammad’s death in AD 632. His followers preserved the material through memorization, recitation, and written records.

Islamic historical accounts describe subsequent efforts to collect and standardize the Qur’anic text during the leadership of the early caliphs.

Why Does the Timeline Matter?

The chronological difference establishes that the writings of the New Testament preceded the Qur’an by more than five centuries.

For historians, understanding when religious documents originated is essential when examining their historical setting, transmission, and claims of authority.

However, an older document is not automatically more accurate or divinely inspired. Historical reliability requires examining authorship, textual preservation, and supporting evidence.

The Investigation Continues

The Bible and Qur’an emerged in different centuries, languages, and religious communities. Their development raises another important question:

Who actually wrote these sacred books, and how did their writings become recognized Scripture?
